2. (TODAY) we will also learn about "neologisms" - words that do not appear in the dictionary but should as a fun game. Then we will create a made-up word of our own and compose a sentence or a few sentences that provide a context clue as to the meaning of your new word. We will switch with a partner and let them try to guess the meaning of your word through the context clues you inserted in the sentence(s).

Today we will begin a unit with the theme of Breaking Away.
The question we will keep in our mind as we read is "How does independence define the American spirit?"
We will begin with the reading selection "The Story of an Hour" in Study Sync.
Log in to Clever using your google email (select "Log in with Google", then select McGraw Hill, then make sure the school in the upper left hand side says Ferris High School. Select Study Sync, and scroll down in your Assignments to the 2 assignments posted today.)
TODAY: Assignment 1: Blast: Blast Away: (In Class today) This is the introduction to the Unit. We will read the Background section on the right, and then answer the "Study Sync Quick Poll" and "Create Your Blast" on the left.

1. Open google Doc "The 6-Word Memoir" & read along as I review the assignment.
2. Watch the You Tube supplemental video on how to write a 6-word memoir.
3. Put your name on the lined paper distributed & make a long list of your personal qualities and things that describe you. (2 minutes)
4. Circle 2-3 descriptions about you which bring to mind a story you could tell about yourself. Then, narrow those 2-3 things that you circled down to one and put an asterisk next to it. (2 minutes)
5. Free write (write down anything that comes to mind when you think about that description of you that you picked. (2 minutes). Free writing is defined in the attached pdf.
6. Now, summarize the main idea or controlling idea of this story in 6 words.
